So I've been thinking about other ways that we can meet and do things besides just watching the series (though I do love that too) and I really would like to have a meeting to discuss issues that have been brought up in the recent Season 8 comics - specifically about issues of Power and the Slayer, compared to the series (specifically is Season 8 changing the ideas of "sharing power" that were brought up in "Chosen" and what does this mean?). The Buffy Season 8 arc "Retreat" seems to be a game changer in that regard, and I think a discussion of it would be very interesting (the final issue of Retreat comes out on November 4th).
I would love to have people read a brief essay about Power and the Buffyverse, from the online journal Slayage. It might be a little "heavy" but I think if you skim over it, you can get the gist of it. I think there are some very interesting issues being brought up through this, and I'd love to discuss them with fellow Buffy folks.
I would like to meet Downtown, at the Diletantte Mocha Cafe (that's an awesome place with good chocolate) in Westlake Center. That way, we are close to my favorite comic book store in Seattle, Zanadu, so if anybody would like to pick up a copy of the comic, they could. I'll bring my copies of course. We can discuss the topic for awhile, and then go to get some drinks or food at a bar somewhere, or we could walk the mile or so back to my house and watch the eps in question. I feel like we're pretty much familiar with the eps though, so I'd love to look at more "meta-themes". I'll bring a few of my critical Buffy Reviews essay books.
There are also some interesting parallels to "Dollhouse" if you'd like to talk about that. I realize this is completely different from what we normally do - so if there aren't enough people interested, I'll cancel it. I just wanted to do something different from what we normally do and I've been thinking about this Power issue in Season 7 vs 8 quite a bit lately. I guess Season 8 has the whole Spiderman "Great Power/Great Responsibility" theme - and what happens when people abuse power?
